Antiphony for the Nativity

Invocation

Officiant: The Lord be with you!
Congregation: And also with you!
Our help and rest come in the name of the Lord our God,
Who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all that is in them.

The Promise of His Coming: Act I

The coming of our Lord and Savior was foretold long ago,
Since most ancient times, the promise has stood.
The beguiling serpent was a liar and a murdered from the beginning,
That ancient serpent called the Devil and Satan.

Of the Enemy and His Downfall

The Lord God said, “Cursed are you above every beast of the earth!
“On your belly, you shall go and eat dust all the days of your life.
“I will put animosity between you and the woman,
“And between your offspring and her offspring.
“He will crush your head,
“Though you shall bruise his heel.”
When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son,
Born of a woman, born under the Law,
To redeem those who were under the Law,
That we might receive the adoption as sons.
Inasmuch as the covenant children have partaken of flesh and blood,
The Son himself shared in the same,
That by death he might destroy the one who had the power of death,
That is the Devil,
And liberate all those who through the fear of death
Were subjugated in slavery all their lives.

The Promise of His Coming: Act II

The coming of our Lord and Savior was foretold long ago,
Since most ancient times, the promise has stood.
Our natural covenant head and father has transgressed on our behalf;
His wickedness and corruption have become our own.

Of the First Adam and the Last Adam

The Lord God said, “Cursed is the ground on account of you,
“In toil, you shall eat of it all the days of your life.
“Both thorns and thistles, it shall bring forth for you.
“In the sweat of your face, you shall eat bread,
“Till you return to the ground from which you were taken.
“For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
Through one transgression, condemnation came to all men;
Through one righteous act, justification came to all men.
Through one man’s disobedience, many were made sinners;
Through one man’s obedience, many were made righteous.
Through one man came death;
Through one man came the resurrection from the dead.
In Adam, all of his covenant offspring die;
In Christ, all of his covenant offspring are made alive.
The first man was from the earth, made from dust;
The second man is the Lord from heaven.
As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust;
As is the heavenly man, so also are those who are heavenly.
And we have borne the image of the man of dust,
We shall also bear the image of the heavenly man.
As many who live by the works of the Law are under the curse.
No one is justified by keeping the Law in the sight of God.
Christ has redeemed us from the curse by becoming the curse for us.
For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.”

The Promise of His Coming: Act III

The coming of our Lord and Savior was foretold long ago,
Since most ancient times, the promise has stood.
Our spiritual covenant head and father has obeyed on our behalf;
His righteousness and perfection have become our own.

Of the Kingdom and the World to Come

The scepter of the kingdom shall never depart from Judah,
Nor the Lawgiver from between his feet,
Until Shiloh comes,
And to him is the obedience of the people.
The people who walked in darkness
Have seen the Great Light.
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them the Light has shined.
Arise, shine; for your light has come!
And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you!
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness shall cover the people.
But the Lord will arise over you
And his glory will be seen upon you.
The nations shall come to your light,
And kings shall come to the brightness of your rising.
For unto us the Child was born; unto us the Son was given.
And the government now rests upon his shoulders.
And his name is called Marvelous Counselor, God of Strength,
Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.
From this time forward and forevermore.
There has come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth,
And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
The leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
The calf and the young lion and the fatling together,
And a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze,
Their young ones shall lie down together,
And the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole,
And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain,
For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea.

Benediction

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
And the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you! Amen.
